From bicycle tag to smuggled bicycle, the Tax & Customs Museum is a contemporary museum around a theme of social importance. With its collection, exhibitions and public activities, the museum is a cultural-historical experience for young and old.
On a journey of discovery
Go on a journey of discovery in the Tax & Customs Museum and be surprised. Special objects and stories give you a thematic and interactive glimpse into our fiscal past. What did people previously have to pay tolls and excise duties on? And until when did people have to pay tax on the bicycle?
Art
The theme inspired old masters such as Isaac Israëls, Jan van Goyen and Jurriaen Pool II. The installations by contemporary artists Caspar Berger and Rueben Margolin put the theme in a contemporary perspective.
Look at it differently
Give your own opinion in the Listening Ear or… relax under the Tax Ceiling, where you can see the facilities passing by. Or take a look at the timeline to see what taxpayer money has been spent on over the centuries and see the development and construction of the Netherlands. In short, look at taxes from a different perspective and give your opinion to a listening ear.
Museum café and garden
After your visit you can relax in the attractive café and, if the weather is nice, in the courtyard.
On the last day of Book Week – Sunday, March 23, 2025 – you can visit this museum for free upon presentation of your Book Week gift.
